Rhode Island AIDS service organizations gathered at the State House for World AIDS Day, but admitted that without additional funding, HIV will continue to be a serious public health problem in the Ocean State.

More than 250 people turned out for the 26th annual Walk for Life in downtown Providence on Sunday, Oct. 2.

The Walk for Life is one of Rhode Island’s largest annual HIV/AIDS fundraisers, but some service providers feel Rhode Islanders need to do more to stop the spread of the virus in the Ocean State.

Tom Bertrand will succeed Stephen Hourahan, who left the organization late last year to join Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s administration as a senior advisor.

Stephen Hourahan, who led the AIDS Project of Rhode Island for the past year, will leave the organization after Gov.-elect Lincoln Chafee appointed him as a senior adviser.

More than 400 people participated in AIDS Project Rhode Island’s 25th annual Walk for Life on Sept. 26, but state budget cuts have threatened the programs that assist those in the state who live with the virus.

Providence’s annual AIDS Walk netted $30,000 to help take care of the 3,000 Island Staters with AIDS. Mayor Cicilline presented a check at the event.
