Scream & Shout! It’s Britney Bitch!
If you’re wondering how Britney Spears is keeping herself relevant these days? The often maligned pop-princess turned singing competition judge is proving she’s still got the "x-factor" currently featuring her vocals on super-producer will.i.am’s newest single "Scream & Shout." When DJ Lina popped the pulsing track over the sound system of New York City hotspot Industry Bar on Saturday night, the back room lounge frenzied into a full-on dance club.
The track’s infectious beat has to lock Brit’s place as the still reigning heir of the pop crown, although Rihanna has been sitting pretty on the throne. The sheer ferocity of the track has all but eclipsed ex-fellow Mouseketeer and also current reality show coach Christina Aguilera’s new album. Aguilera’s voice is still substantially beefier than Spears’ any day, her lotus flower looks to wither under the drive of will.i.am’s forceful syncopation and Brit’s undeniable appeal.
The two have collaborated once before. On her full-length album "Femme Fatale" Britney Spears had Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am. supply her with one of the album’s club-thumpers "Big Fat Bass" - and now they are back with what could well be the song of the season. Whether "Scream & Shout" will have the bpms to make it through the winter is still to be seen, but the song is already generating a lot enthusiasm amongst Britney’s fans.
With the ratings starting to slide on her current stint on TV’s "X-Factor," and everyone anticipating wildly the next train wreck to premiere - have we forgotten the new season of "American Idol" is just around the corner? Britney Spears may not be all washed up on the music scene just yet.
"Femme Fatale" was a nominal hit for Ms. Spears back in 2011. It debuted at number one and elicited first-week sales of 276,000 copies, tying her for third place with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson as the top female artist with the most number one albums. The album didn’t exactly yield very many hit singles, but it inspired DJ/remix producer Tracy Young to come out of semi-retirement. Young remixed Britney’s first single from FF "Hold It Against Me" and it went to #1 on Billboard as well as world wide dance charts.
"Scream & Shout" may be a promising first track form will.i.am’s upcoming solo project, but it has reignited interest in Britney Spears...as a performer. Although there has been talk that she was edging her way off the pop-music radar after the "Femme Fatale" World Tour - Spears had been recently engaged, and her management was spreading the word that the pop-princess wanted to retire while still on top - "Scream & Shout" suggests that perhaps Brit Brit has been bitten by the bug of the big fat base.
Will she leave her fans screaming and shouting for more? Britney Spears has time to court back our gay heart until the mightiest gay icon of all Cher unleashes her new hit and claims back her post - after all..it’s a woman’s world.
The video for will.i.am’s "Scream & Shout" featuring Britney Spears will premiere this week’s "X-Factor" on FOX.
