The Wedding Invitation Showcases Women in Film
In an effort to increase the presence of women in Hollywood pictures, producers Rainy Kerwin and Narmar Hanna are filming "The Wedding Invitation," with an all-women crew and cast. They will give 5 percent of the film’s profits to 10 charities benefitting women.
"This project is very dear to my heart," said Kerwin, who is also the writer-director of the film. "It encompasses the three things that I am most passionate about: creating, empowering women and giving back. We’re working to create a circle of energy that continues to grow."
"The Wedding Invitation" -- A Film for Women, by Women is more than just a film project. Kerwin and Hanna, the women behind the project, are determined to bring light to the meager numbers of women working in the entertainment business. Last year, women accounted for only 18 percent of writers, directors, producers and editors of the top 250 grossing films.
A female-driven romantic comedy about taking back your control, the story follows three single girls as they break all the dating rules in an attempt to find the perfect dates for the wedding of the year. Lucy is an adorable dork/marketing genius, Ryann is a sassy tomboy with a kind heart and witty tongue, and Necter is a basketball-loving beauty model.
"’The Wedding Invitation’ is a gem of a script," said Clare Kilner, director of "The Wedding Date" with Amy Adams. "It’s contemporary, has original characters, lashings of humor and a big heart!"
What started out as a small campaign has snowballed into a platform for empowering women in a man’s world. Recent additions to the team include Bonnie-Jill Laflin, a strong advocate for empowering women who has worked her way up from a cheerleader to a sportscaster and finally to the first and only female player scout in the NBA.
"We’re ecstatic to have Bonnie-Jill on board," said Kerwin, "She’s the perfect voice for our campaign. She knows first hand how hard it can be to make it in a man’s world."
Laflin said she was very excited to be involved with the film, noting that, "As someone who has worked in both professional sports and entertainment, I can honestly say there’s one thing they have in common: both worlds have been traditionally led by and for men. Women have had to fight to make their voices heard. I know firsthand that people often make assumptions about what my job is or what I had to do to get it. And I sometimes feel like I have to be better than the men just to keep up. It reminds me of Ginger Rogers’ old saying that she ’did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in high heels.’"
"The Wedding Invitation" will be shot with an entirely female crew and lead cast, but their mission to empower women has a much more global reach than just the entertainment industry. They’re donating 5 percent of the film’s net profits to ten different charities aimed at empowering, inspiring and healing women. Some of the heavy-hitters that they’ve partnered up with include GLAAD, Women In Film and Glam-a-THON™.
It’s Raining Films (IRF), the production company behind "The Wedding Invitation" is currently funding the project through Indiegogo http://Now.TheWeddingInvitationMovie.com. In partnership with Indiegogo’s Giving Tuesday campaign, "The Wedding Invitation" brought in over $14,000 in one day!
"We still have a long way to go," said Hanna, "We’re a quarter of the way there with 27 more days to raise the money. We’re confident we can do it. We just need the word to keep spreading and the donations to keep coming in."
